The Indians migrated through this area with the seasons, taking advantage of the best weather and making use of plants and wildlife including harvesting the pine nuts on the south end of the Grouse CreekMountains in the fall. An old Shoshone “Grouse Creek Jack” and his followers were well known in the early days of the settlement. Evidence of this is the petroglifics on the cave in Chadwick Basin and the seven individuals buried in the Grouse Creek cemetery. I personally met him on a few occasions when he came to my fathers store in Yost after picking pine nuts there. They would come and trade very nice buckskin gloves for groceries.
